  • Ayurvedic treatment for Avascular Necrosis

Avascular necrosis is the condition where an interruption of subchondral blood supply leads to the death of bone cells of weight bearing joints. It is a painful disease which does not show early symptoms. This disease is often misdiagnosed or diagnosed very late. At our ayurvedic clinic, we have seen many patients who kept complaining of hip pain and stiffness to their doctors but didn’t get diagnosed. The doctors sidelined the pain stating it is a lifestyle disorder or a bad posture related pain. So, when the patient is diagnosed, Avascular Necrosis has already reached to grade III or grade IV.

The pain can differ from moderate to severe in patients of AVN. If pain persists over hips, buttocks, thighs and stiffness accompanies the pain, it is important to get radiological reports done to rule out Avascular Necrosis.

AVN can occur in any bone, but it most commonly affects thigh bone causing hip pain and knee pain. AVN can be disabling depending upon which part of the body is affected.

Steroids is one of the most important causes of Avascular Necrosis. This is why post COVID we are seeing a lot of AVN cases in OPDs. Avascular necrosis of the femur head is one of the recognized side effects of steroids.

Is there a treatment of AVN in Ayurveda?

According to Ayurveda, three doshas will be prominent in AVN majorly Vata. The classics have described that Vata resides in bones and if it aggravates, it can cause degeneration of bone tissue. This is how manifestation of AVN starts. Pitta resides in blood hence in AVN, Pitta is also responsible because there is lack of blood supply. There is blockage of channels in the bone for which Kapha is responsible. When Vata, Pitta, Kapha are balanced, the pain will get alleviated and condition of necrosis will improve. Along with Panchkarma therapies, diet and exercise is also important which we generally advise to AVN patients at our centre.

What foods help avascular necrosis?

Diet is very important in auto immune disorders. A healthy diet promotes healing and prevents further damage in AVN. Plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds can be consumed. Dairy products should be strictly avoided like cheese, paneer, curd, milk.

You should use supplements wisely. Over usage of calcium vitamin D supplements without doctor’s prescription can cause more harm. Eat smaller meals in a day. You should keep yourself hydrated.
