What is Psoriasis in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, psoriasis is considered a skin disorder associated with an imbalance in the three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The specific imbalances and their manifestations can vary from person to person. Ayurvedic treatment for psoriasis focuses on restoring balance to the doshas, detoxifying the body, and promoting overall well-being.

Ayurvedic medicines for Psoriasis:

Ayurveda has a wide range of medicines for skin diseases especially Psoriasis. There are medicines like Manjishta, Khadir, Kalmegh, Neem, Guggulu, Sariva, Shweta Chandan which help in treating psoriasis, but it should be taken under guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic doctor. These medicines have anti-microbial properties and anti-inflammatory properties. They bring down the inflammation in the body which is seen in auto immune diseases.

Things to be kept in mind if you have Psoriasis.

  1. Dosha Imbalance: Psoriasis is often associated with an aggravation of Pitta dosha and accumulation of toxins (ama) in the body. However, Vata and Kapha imbalances can also play a major role. The treatment aims in bringing these doshas back into balance which a good ayurvedic doctor can do.
  2. Dietary recommendations: Diet plays an important role in Psoriasis and other autoimmune disorders. Lot of Psoriasis patients question if they should give up dairy products. It is seen that patients completely cured of psoriasis see it rebound if dairy products intake is started. So, it is better to avoid dairy products when you are on Psoriasis treatment. It is also recommended to reduce Pitta aggravating foods and oily foods.
  3. Lifestyle recommendations: Stress is considered as a trigger for psoriasis flare ups. Practices like Yoga, meditation can help to deal with stress. Also, there are ayurvedic medicines for stress like Ashwagandha, Jatamansi, Brahmi which should be taken under guidance of the best ayurvedic doctor for psoriasis.

    Panchkarma Chikitsa

Panchkarma/Detoxification Treatment for PsoriasisDetoxification (Panchkarma): Detoxification has more of become a buzzword these days. But it should be carefully done and it should be undergone if Ayurvedic doctor suggests you and it should be done at a dedicated centre. At our clinic, we have seen complications of wrongly done Panckarma procedures at other centres.

Panchakarma is a set of Ayurvedic therapeutic procedures used for detoxification and purification. The specific Panchkarma treatments recommended for psoriasis may include Vamana, Virechana, Basti. It is not that after panchkarma, you would not need oral medicines but as toxins are eliminated, your body responds fairly well to oral medicines after these procedures.

We have successfully treated many psoriasis patients with ayurvedic treatment. In some cases, only oral medicines are needed whereas some need aggressive treatment like Panchakarma for psoriasis.

It is important to consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner who can assess your individual constitution, dosha imbalances, and the specific nature of your psoriasis before recommending a personalized treatment plan.
