  • How to treat Acidity with Ayurveda medicines and treatment?

Do you have to think before eating the food offered to you by your friend, “What if this causes acidity”?

Why do you follow a simple diet pattern still half the time struggle to find out what gives you acidity?

Does lying down on bed at night give you acid refluxes though day had been completely fine?

Signs and symptoms of Acidity

We get a patient suffering from recurrent sore throat who has been on medicines of different ENT but doesn’t respond, we put them on simple Pitta decreasing medicines and sore throat is gone. There are patients who say they get headache after eating outside food.

Few signs and symptoms of acidity which are very easy to make out are you may have heaviness in abdomen.

Sour belching- Another sign you may get sour eructations or when you brush your teeth in the morning, you have sour water coming out from the mouth

Diarrhoea- Some patients say they easily get diarrhoea the next day of eating food in parties or social gatherings because such food is generally masala laden.

Other symptoms

Cardiac pain

The first thing a doctor does to every patient who complains of chest pain and presents is give an antacid just because both the symptoms are similar. Acidity can present in the form of pain over chest, heaviness over chest, pricking feeling over chest. This is why when you complain of gas, your dotors always think of heart and when you complain of chest pain, they may think of gas

Body pain

There are patients who complain of body pain, they do not have fever but they complain that they feel fever from inside. Nothing concrete comes out in all blood work they undergo. Ayurveda says body pain can be because of Ama (the undigested food) in the body. So do not neglect if you are suffering from dull body pain throughout the day

Chronic dry cough

A 20 year girl who came to me with history of chronic cough told as allergic cough by many doctors of the city. Assessing her prakriti and vikriti we reached a diagnosis this is Pittaj Kasa, i.e cough due to high pitta in the body. She responded remarkably to few medicines and rigorous diet modification. That doesn’t mean every dry cough is due to vitiated Pitta but yes there are cases. Diagnosing correctly is the key which an Ayurveda physician can do

Home remedies for Acidity

Internet is flooded with remedies for Acidity. Your family friends are always ready with some or the other remedy once you tell that you are having acidity issues. But let me tell you some simple, effective and easier to put into practice.

Soak coriander seeds in a glass of water at night. Next morning filter the water and drink it

Chewing saunf seeds with mishri is the best remedy anyone can try. Saunf seeds also improves metabolism that’s the reason why they are offered after food in restaurants.

Coconut water is cold in nature. So, if you are suffering from acidity, this one is a good remedy which is also rich in antioxidants.

Usheer water is also a good remedy to bank on. Usheer is easily available in market. You can boil 1 litre of water with 60 gms dry usheer in it. Let it cool down filter it and drink 2-3 times in a day

Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s (Pathya)

You should also inculcate few rules of Aahaar VidhiVidhan

Have meals on time- Do not procrastinate because of work stress, calls, meetings.

Follow the hunger clock of your body

Eat according to your Prakriti – If you are a pitta prakriti person and you start eating methi seeds just because someone told you it will take care of your knee joints, you are bound to start experiencing hyperacidity

If you are a Yoga doer, inculcate asanas like Bhujangasana, Pavan Muktasan, Paschimottanasan, Kapal Bhati in your session

Don’t’s (Apathya)

Avoid excessive sour, salty, spicy food, junk food, fasting

Avoid food containing excessive garlic, oil, chillies, tea, coffee, aspirin, pain killers, avoid stress

A simple acidity can cause erosions in stomach, food pipe and even ulcers that may bleed. So never sideline the signs and symptoms of hyperacidity.

Try simple remedies and if that doesn’t help, feel free to seek the advice of an Ayurveda physician. Popping up an antacid empty stomach each morning is a quick fix but not a permanent one.
